post-THIS IS IT, are concert films the next big goldmine?

After the reasonable success of the documentary about a dead, past-it 50 year old's rehearsals for a series of concerts he only agreed to do because of crippling financial difficulties caused by his own bizarre and allegedly criminal behaviour, looks like the studio moneymen have realised that concert films could be the next big thing, again. In 3D, no less....

First up is a film titled "Larger Than Life...in 3D Featuring the Dave Matthews Band, Ben Harper and Relentless7 and Gogol Bordello."

Good concert films are rare - live music is a tough thing to capture authentically for cinemas. The documentary Gimme Shelter on the Stones' ill-fated Altamont concert, Bowie's sci-fi mentalness in Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars and The Beastie Boys’ Awesome, I…Shot That are among the few worth mentioning. Before Jacko died, the biggest concert movie of all time was Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds. So at least we’ll be able to thank This Is It for dethroning that little gem.
